My name is Alan Harte and I have been in Health and Safety for the last 14 years. My career started in Premier Prison Services (Now Serco) when they were looking for in house first aid trainers, and I volunteered to go on the training course. I completed the course and I was told that I had a flair for teaching so I took that onboard and started teaching.

I taught for 3 ½ years for Premier Prison Services as to start with as a in house trainer and a prison officer, spending more and more time with the training new recruits, in this time I also took on the sub role as a Health & Safety Officer, doing some inspections and reports on a semi regular basis.

I was later offered an opportunity to join the NHS as a first aid trainer and clinical manual handling trainer. This was a challenging role that taught me a lot about how large organisations function, the good and the bad point, and the problems that they face on a day to day basis and on an organisational level. My interest in Health and Safety was increased within the NHS and I went on training courses to increase my knowledge, and I put all this knowledge into my role and the safety issues that the NHS had on a daily basis.

After working for the NHS for 7 years I thought it was time to move on and so I took over Smart Safety Ltd from a very good friend of mine and went out on my own in January 2007 and from there we have gone from strength to strength. We have a consistent client base, from large London banks, blue chip clients, small businesses and schools.

At Smart Safety we pride ourselves in being able to provide a complete service, we aim to take clients from the initial stages of their first audits and inspections, to training, policy writing and implementation to equipment and supplies, we believe in the ethos of keeping things as simple as possible.
